Planning a Recovery Week in Tijuana: The Logistics Nobody Tells You About
The surgery is scheduled and the recovery house is booked. What is usually missing is the plan for the eight or nine separate trips you are going to need between them.
A typical recovery week has more movement than people expect
Most patients arrive imagining two trips: in and out. The real pattern is closer to this: airport to hotel, hotel to clinic on surgery morning, clinic to recovery house that afternoon, recovery house to clinic on day two, again on day three or four, a laboratory or imaging stop somewhere in the middle, a pharmacy run, and finally the crossing back to San Diego or the airport.
That is eight or nine movements over five to seven days, and every one of them happens while you are less mobile than usual, in a city you do not know, in a language you may not speak.
Book the whole week at once
Booked individually, each of those trips is an improvisation. Booked as a plan, they are a schedule: the same dispatch knows your addresses, your clinic and your restrictions, and the units are reserved before demand takes them.

Choosing where to recover
Recovery houses cluster in Otay, Zona Río, Chapultepec and Playas. Otay is closest to the airport and the Otay Mesa crossing. Zona Río puts you minutes from most surgical centres and laboratories. Playas is the quietest and the furthest from the clinics, which is a fair trade for many people but adds twenty to thirty minutes to every follow-up.
None of them is wrong. What matters is knowing the trade before you book, because the daily follow-up is what you will actually live with.
The day of the procedure
Plan the morning to arrive early rather than on time — surgical check-ins run ahead as often as they run behind, and arriving flustered is a bad way to start.
For the afternoon transfer from clinic to recovery house, book the Premium Medical service. It is a fifteen-minute trip and it is the one that patients remember most vividly, in one direction or the other, depending on whether the vehicle was right.
The trip home
The final crossing is the second trip worth spending money on. If your flight is out of San Diego, plan the northbound line generously; if it is out of Tijuana, CBX takes the border out of the equation entirely.
